Major Performance Issues with ToS

Mine was set to moderate (3 second delay)
I set it to 15 seconds to see if it improves anything but it may be a while before I get a chance to be at home during live trading
Unfortunately I need the analyze tab for all the other accounts so I can't go without that one
 
If you are having problems with a delay in the refresh of TOS when actions are taken especially when you are using the Analyzer try the fix below. For a month I would click on a simulated trade and the greeks would update but the graph would wait for up to 10 to 15 seconds to refresh. I talked to Support 4 times and we changed the memory, deleted the usergui file and they went into my computer and did something to relieve stress on my graphics card. Some of this would help for a few hours and back to the delay.

I finally found a support person that knew something. He said I probably had a corrupted workspace and I need to do some things to fix that. Below are the steps (the workspace file is located in the setup function at the top right of the screen). It copied this from the TOS support chat. It fixed my performance problems. Also you need to save your simulated trades before you do this and then import them back in so you don't have to recreate those.

Lets try this : click setup in the upper right again and then save workspace. Save your layout again as either test or a new name. Then click setup in the upper right again, then reset workspace to default. Once you are on a clean slate, try the analyze again and let me know if it improves.

Very good, i think what we are seeing is a workspace corruption. I think your best bet moving foreword will be to recreate your previous workspace within this new one. I would say, save this as a new setup as well. Then you can load back in between the 2 to recreate your old one in the new workspace.

These are the worst issues we have as they are rare and the only way around is to start fresh unfortunately.

Another trick is to delete any simulated trades that you aren't using. This can slow it down too.

Not much improvement for me on the analyze tab

I reset the workspace and loaded just one condor trade and when I restarted the expiration graph showed up right away but the greeks and the t+0 line took another 15 seconds to load
Then I went back to my original workspace and after a reset it took 25 seconds to load a similar condor trade
So I would only shave of about 10 seconds and that's just for one trade and I need all my other simulated trades so that;s not going to work for me

Have you deleted your UserGUI file and you might uninstall TOS and reinstall it. Sorry it didn't work for you.
 
I am having the same problem. Not very happy with TOS right now. I have called support like 5 times. Deleted user GUI, and excess simulations. Painful.
 
RTD references via Excel can overload TOS. So if you have large numbers of RTD references, that can be issue. --- If this is the case, there are some options without killing your RTD efforts.

Deleting the user file is one of the first thing they tell you to do which I have done in the past but it never helps anything so I have not done it this time since I am pretty sure it's not going to help
I reinstalled TOS sometime this past summer for other reason (RTD related) but that made no difference
as far as the loading speed is concerned
This has been an issue for a few years now so it;s not like it happened all of a sudden
As they come out with new versions for faster pc's it seems to be getting progressively slower on the existing pc
It seems like I would have to upgrade my pc every time they come up with a new version which I am trying not to do unless I realy have to

I have RTD references but I am not using that excel file at EOD so that is not an issue for me
Just out of curiosity I was just wondering what are those other options
 
The "options" I referenced has to do with RTD. This may not pertain to you, but I sometimes have over 20K RTD references at a time, so to keep from interfering with TOS responsiveness I turn off the automatic RTD updates, and refresh only as needed. The typical default (unless you have altered it) is to refresh RTD each 2 seconds. This setting is programmable (in Excel or via the Registry) via "RTD.ThrottleInterval". I would guess if your qty of RTD references is less than 100, this is not your issue.

Unrelated to RTD, I have observed significant TOS performance issues with some ThinkScripts running (as Studies or Strategies).

Did you reset your workspaces as described above?
 
Yes I reset the workspace I just did not delete the user file and as I said there was a small improvement of the delay from 25 to 15 seconds but I think that was mainly due to the fact that after the reset I did not have all the additional simulated trades
If I would have added all the trades back in the workspace that was reset I probably would have seen no difference
Bottom line the real fix is I probably need to upgrade my pc but at this time it's not worth doing it just to make TOS work a little faster
 
I tried the tip from Challenger and it works very well for me
I am at home today and I am using TOS during live trading so with the no delay or 3 second delay when I click on one of the simulated trades it takes a couple of minutes for anything to show up
Actually after 1 minute I gave up because there is no way I am going to use it like that
Also with the 3 second or no delay everything else slows down not just the analyze tab
On the charts if I click on the time frame it takes about 9 seconds for the drop down list to appear and after I click on a certain time it takes another 26 seconds for the chart to appear

So than I switched to the 15 second delay and when I click on any simulated trade it comes up almost right away maybe 1 second delay although sometimes it takes a little longer I am guessing that's during the refresh cycle but that's a lot better than waiting for minutes for one click to do something
So I can still use it like this even with minor delays and I have all my simulated trades (about 65) still on the analyze tab

Basically I upgraded to a better pc I got a used 4th gen Intel pc
So now TOS not only loads faster but the analyze tab runs well as it should
As soon as I click on a simulated trade it shows up right away even during trading hours
Now let's see how long it will stay this way before the developers at TOS try to add more stuff to it to slow it down again

Awesome! I had to upgrade my computer about a year ago.
 
Is there a reason not to max out the memory usage numbers in the TOS settings? (Assuming you have a new/quality computer with plenty of ram)

I'm seeing the highest options on my TOS setup as being 4096 - 6553
 
I upgraded my desktop PC to the latest 7th gen Intel CPU, 32GB RAM, 1070 nVidia GPU... works like a charm. Now I can open lots of TOS windows, lots of RTD links. No problem. Worth the investment in my opinion.

Kevin, what do you have your memory levels set to in TOS, on the login page?

Any reason not to set both to the highest number?

I set 512 as the min and the max is I think 20+GB. Can't remember. I asked TOS tech support sometime ago. They told me to keep a wide spread between min and max. Not sure why. Actual usage is normally between 4-8GB. But GPU utilization does go up a lot when I open many graphs.
 
Try maxing memory and note your CPU use - goes way up for me. So I keep my memory low

A week or so ago, I worked with a TOS tech on a problem specific to my setup. In that process, he set my memory settings as: 2048 / 4096 (note the 4096 is not in the pull down, you have to enter manually)
Even though I have 8 GB on the machine, he said the lower setting forced TOS to clean out the trash more often which helps. I applied these settings to all my TOS machines, it seems like the RTD links lock up less frequently. If you are having RTD problems you might try going to these settings.
