Astonishing numbers from the Artemis I mission

I just happened to click on this news story and after reading into it some of the things did not make sense than I saw it was from CNN a typical fake news story with omissions and confusing statements

From the headline "Almost 50 years later, NASA is ready to return humans to the lunar surface with the Artemis program. This next chapter of lunar exploration will land the first woman and first person of color on the moon, paving the way for a human presence on the moon"

you would think this would be the first time that humans would return to the moon but after reading through the numbers they post this
"0 astronauts will be onboard. Artemis I is an uncrewed mission to test systems in a spaceflight environment. "

So the "first woman and first person of color" has nothing to do with Artemis I but they had to throw that in there to get their agenda in the story

Another nonsense number
280,000 miles (450,600 km) is the distance the Artemis I mission will travel from Earth, far beyond the moon.
Really ? This is the distance from earth far beyond the moon ? Isn't Artemis I supposed to come back to earth ? I guess that's not important

More confusion
2,000 pounds (900 kg) of weight was saved by making the rocket boosters single-use instead of reusable. The Space Launch System (SLS) no longer carries the fuel or the propulsion system it would have needed to haul them back during its return to Earth.
So the "first woman and first person of color" are not planing to come back to earth ?

Three Artemis missions are currently in progress; Artemis 1, an uncrewed test flight around and beyond the Moon, launching 29 August 2022. Artemis 2, a crewed flight beyond the Moon which will take humans the farthest they’ve ever been in space. And Artemis 3, a mission that will land the first female astronaut and first astronaut of colour on the Moon to spend a week performing scientific studies on the lunar surface.

So CNN shoved a bunch of numbers all under the Artemis I headline when in reality it's 3 separate missions

You seem to be omitting vital information, thereby creating a confusing statement. The headline as I see it reads:

You have omitted the last part (in bold), maybe in error, maybe not. This last part could have been a hint that the Artemis program consists of multiple missions. They never assert that the first mission would return people to the moon.

I understand what you are saying but why I do I need to have a hint to figure out what they are trying to say
The headline was about Artemis I in numbers so you would figure these numbers or the article is about Artemis I not about some other programs in the future which may or may not come and which number belongs to what mission

That is exactly what the CNN headline you have cited in your first post is talking about: "[...] NASA is ready to return humans to the lunar surface with the Artemis program [...]". Granted, the article title above that is "Artemis I in numbers" indeed, but I can't help to find the following text to be clarifying, to say the least.

No offense intended, but I insist on pushing back when people are crying "Fake News" at every perceived opportunity.

Reading it to them is not going to make the information clearer unless you interpret what they are trying to say or fill in the missing information

No. That would have been easy. However, I think it would have been less precise, indeed even incorrect and misleading, had CNN done so.

The article's title is "Artemis I in numbers". So we'd expect to be served facts about Artemis I. Let's see.

The headline (below the title) provides context and states the general goals of the Artemis program, which "begins with Artemis I". This informs us that Artemis I is the first mission within the Artemis program, with more to follow. While you seem to take issue with CNN providing context, I personally welcome it, as I was not familiar with Artemis until a few days ago.

The main part of the article actually contains the promised numbers, along with explanatory text, that pertain a) to the Artemis I mission specifically and b) to the Artemis program, the Space Launch System and the Orion capsule in general. All of the latter apply to the current Artemis I mission. CNN makes the explicit distinction of which is which (with the exception of "10 CubeSats"). I have investigated a few of those numbers, they check with sources (NASA itself, Wikipedia).

Yes, the distance is correct. Artemis I will be "[...] traveling about 40,000 miles (64,000 kilometers) past the Moon. [...]" (NASA Artemis I press kit). Add to that the average distance of the Moon from Earth, you arrive at ~450,000 km maximum distance. Note this is different from the total distance traveled, which CNN also states as ~2.1 million km, in the info box right below, in case that is causing your confusion. All of those numbers check out just fine with the NASA Artemis I press kit (surprise, CNN can read press kits). The info box at the upper right ("[...] splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.") should have served as a hint that a return to Earth is indeed intended.

I can't follow you here. I don't see how the word "them" could point to anything else than the rocket boosters that are mentioned in the previous sentence. Assuming the crew would not return seems quite far-fetched for me. I read nothing that would support such a conclusion.

Overall, I judge this article to be a faithful no-nonsense compilation of some simple facts, pertaining to the Artemis I mission as well as the Artemis program, so far as the general facts apply to the Artemis I mission specifically. There is no information about any Artemis 2 or 3 missions, except that humans will land on the Moon eventually. Hence the title is not misleading. What I see in this article is just a basic demonstration of journalism 101. An intern's practice assignment. It adheres to journalistic virtues like accuracy and truthfulness. All I could accuse the authors of is creating a sense of awe and historic relevance, which might well be justified.

If you have the impression that CNN conveys "a typical fake news story with omissions and confusing statements", I fail to grasp how you can possibly see your impression confirmed by this article. I guess that's all I have to say.

I have a much better understanding about the story now after you clarified some of my wrong assumptions which started with the first human on the moon eventually but not with Artemis I

Of course it was Louis Armstrong who was first on the moon. Space Shuttle forever!!!
