VPN Recommendations?

I am wondering what VPN services various members may use/recommend when traveling, using laptops in public places, etc? I have yet to sign on with any particular service. What are experiences with affects on internet speed, ubiquity of service, other important factors? I plan to go to Italy & Greece on a cruise.
Thanks in advance for anyone that responds.

StrongVPN. It will slow down your speed though. So far any will.
I have not found any that work in China well. Eventually (a few days), it gets attacked.

I'm really not sure why you are asking about VPN. I suspect you are asking about cloud.

I use www.privateinternetaccess.com. Bought a year using my digital wallet and bitcoin, allows me to cover my mac, iphone, ipad, and two more machines. I normally connect through their "midwest" point or Chicago. I have no experience with using their service outside of this Illinois/Indiana area, yet.

i set up my own server using openVPN ... it was a little painful to get going but it means the ony speed limitation is the available bandwidth ... and its free :-)

SSH is free, but you need to "roll your own" and consider your security requirements. (I use SSH, but only open as required) Use home server as launching pad.

Have folks found that usage of a VPN makes trading slow?
Absolutely. For normal web surfing you probably won't notice much difference. But for any sort of data stream or large downloads you'll see a big hit on throughput and latency.

Normally your network routing is more or less optimized for the fewest hops to the destination. If you're in North America and connected to the Think Or Swim servers then your routing hops will lie pretty much in a straight line path on the same continent. If you use a VPN then you're introducing at extra hop that probably does not lie along that shortest path. Many VPNs are in Europe which makes it even worse. Your data packets are routed to Europe, then back to NA which significantly increases latency.

That is what I figured. It has to bounce off another server and back which create extra latency. I used it to get cross firewalls. However, many people were using it (no me) to watch the likes of Neflix ...so they pretend that they are located in the US. There are other things like free programs in the UK.

I read that Internet access on cruise line is really bad, so (bad access + VPN overhead = just enjoy the cruise)... I've been investigating since I'm going to take a cruise soon as well.

Internet on a cruise is not always that bad but coverage on board is highly variable. The weather can also affect availability so it cant be relied on. I certainly wouldnt try and manage any short term or close to expiry trades while cruising. As Dan recently demonstrated it is possible to manage Roadtrips while on a 'sea'trip... although a couple of days like early feb could be a problem. I think there is a lot of merit in your "just enjoy the cruise" equation.
