Best Laptop for trading

Thanks Boomer, but my work requires me to use a Mac, and I love Mac anyways. If I did not have to load 20 other softwares on Mac for daily use, I think I would not worry about the slight lag, but right now my machine is quite cramped so trying to figure - cloud vs second machine vs just parallels as a last resort. Anyways, I guess I have to see what works for me, and I can probably test drive a VPS and see how it feels.

Hi Boomer,

Those are impressive specs in such a small package. Once you've played with it a bit, it would be interesting to hear feedback on how warm it runs in the context of using it on your lap for an extended period of time.

The only thing that bugs me about my macbook pro is the heat that's generated after a while is unbearable on the lap. The thinner chassis of the surface book would be nice to, although that's less of an annoyance to me.

In a similar situation and looking to pull trigger on the MS Surface Book and need to finalize specs. I run TOS only on my Dell with 4MB RAM and it can't keep up especially with Outlook, Excel, webpages, other software running which you need to do when juggling work and keeping up on trades. So key for me is to understand if 8GB RAM is enough. I don't run OV now but may in the future.

From what i read above, for trading, i5 CPU is fine (don't really need i7 unless including serious gaming) and 8GB also enough RAM. Is this the consensus?

I went with the i7, 8GB model. But I had others tell the the i5 model would have been sufficient. It is truly a great laptop!
 
I'm not much of a computer guy, will the Microsoft Surface Pro (not the book/laptop) 256 GB, 8 Gb ram, Intel core i5, be able to handle TOS, and OV ?

What about this laptop?
I had ended up buying a monster laptop from eztradingcomputers.com but it is really a desktop computer in a laptop body, way, way, way, way too heavy to travel with. Did I say it's too heavy? I took it to Costa Rica with me for three months this winter and was very unhappy moving it around so I still need a lighter laptop to travel with or lie on the couch with. What do you guys think of this one compared to say the Windows surface book or whatever that one is called now?

I have been been with Mac since its first PC and I still lover their design and functionality. But as many of you I experienced too many problems when it comes to work with trading software (Ninja Trader, ONE, OptionVue etc.). About one year ago, I changed to a Dell XPS15 (without touch screen) with an i76700HQ processor, 16 GB RAM and Windows 10 installed. No claim so far, works perfectly. For office and private stuff I am still using Mac, but my trading is no exclusively on PC/Microsoft. Another advantage of this trader-privets setup is that on my trading PC I am not messing around with potentially insecure webpages, e mails, chats, facebook accounts, games etc. Only clean install of software I use for trading and data analysis.

If I were buying for mobility, I would get the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1. It's basically their version of the Lenovo you linked. It has a nearly edge-to-edge screen so you get a great screensize-to-portability ratio. Surface Book and Surface Pro would be runners up, depending on how you'd use it.
 
From my research today, I think I will buy the Windows Surface Book, however, I may wait until they come out with an upgrade later in the year as I don't really need it until I head back to Costa Rica next January. It will be expensive but it should be a terrific machine. Does anybody fault my logic here?

Does anyone know whether the Windows 10 system "variant " installed on the Surface Book is a "normal" version of Windows 10 so that one can be 100% sure to be able to run the same applications without any limitations and in the same way as on a laptop/desktop with Windows 10 Pro or Home edition installed?

There are credible rumors we'll see the surface book refresh in the Fall as a more normal 2-in-1, and that the new design will be cheaper. I think that's worth waiting for and am curious to see it myself.
